Summer Safety Tips for Seniors

Summer-Safety-Tips-for-Seniors

Summer is the perfect time to explore the outdoors. And our Southview Senior Communities provide plenty of events and activities for residents to get out and enjoy all the things this season has to offer. While it’s no secret that our Minnesota summers can be hot and sticky, we want to be sure residents are staying cool in the heat. That’s why we’ve put together a short list of summer safety tips for seniors.

Fluids, Fluids, Fluids

Drinking water is something we should all aim for no matter the time of year. But during the hot summer months, staying hydrated is especially important to help fend off heat exhaustion and dehydration. And because our bodies are less able to regulate temperature as we age, seniors in particular are more susceptible to heat-related health concerns.

Caffeinated drinks like coffee can magnify the potential for dehydration. Instead, stick with simple liquids like water or coconut water. The latter contains electrolytes such as potassium, which is beneficial for bone health and heart health and helps alleviate cramping.

If you’re participating in outdoor activities, increase water intake to replenish what you’re losing through sweat.

Avoid Strenuous Activity

Keep an eye on the weather. If you plan to be outdoors on a day that’s predicted to be toasty, take it easy on yourself. Rest in the shade when you need to. Move at a slower pace. Look for ramps or elevators to avoid overexertion on hills or stairs.

Summer temperatures are usually warmest in the middle of the day, so another idea is to plan your outdoor activities for early in the morning or later in the evening. That way, you can still complete your tasks or adventures when the air is cooler and more comfortable.

Stay Out of the Sun

Being outside when it’s hot is one thing. But being in the sun when it’s hot can make those warm temps feel even more intense.

If you plan to be outdoors during the day, seek out cooler spots. Have your picnic next to a tree or cluster of trees at the park. Read your book under an umbrella at the beach. Sit with friends or play games in the shaded section of a patio.

If you’re on a walk or out and about, take advantage of the shade from buildings, trees, or other structures as much as possible. And remember to bring water with you. Go on indoor shopping sprees or take in a movie in an air-conditioned theater and save your outdoor activities for later, when the temperatures outside cool off.

Wear the Right Clothing

The right clothing can help keep your body cool even in the summer heat. Choose lightweight and loose-fitting attire made from breathable materials. Avoid wearing dark colors, as they absorb heat from the sun.

Additionally, sunglasses provide extra protection from the sun’s rays. And hats, especially bucket hats with wide brims, help keep the sun and its heat away from your head, neck, and face to help you stay cooler.

Chill Out in the A/C

On those days when it’s simply too hot and sticky outside, stay indoors and relax in air-conditioned comfort. Instead, find activities you can enjoy inside, like catching up on a favorite show, reading a book, painting or drawing, or spending time with friends. Save your errands, gardening, or other outdoor tasks for another, cooler day.

But if you are spending time outside in the heat, be sure to take breaks and cool off in the A/C. Sit in front of a fan and rehydrate. Make sure you feel well enough for a walk or other activity before venturing back out.
